In the official release of Windows 11, when multiple monitors are connected, each display features a taskbar at the bottom. However, only the primary monitor presents the most comprehensive content—such as system tray icons and the notification center.
On secondary monitors, the system tray displays only the clock, omitting other icons like quick actions, network status, input method indicators, and background process icons. As for Microsoft’s reasoning behind this design choice, it remains unclear.
In the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview, Microsoft has made modest improvements to multi-monitor support. In the updated version, secondary monitors now display not only the clock module but also the notification icon. Clicking this icon opens the notification center, allowing users to view all recent alerts.

For instance, if a user is browsing the web on a secondary monitor, their attention and cursor are likely focused there. In such cases, new notifications can be accessed directly from the secondary monitor, eliminating the need to shift focus and move the cursor back to the primary display.
Additionally, this update enables the clock module on secondary monitors to be interactive. Clicking the clock now opens the calendar. This feature is not enabled by default; users must activate it by navigating to Settings > Time & Language > Date & Time > Notification Center, and enabling the Show Time Button.
Once activated, clicking the time will first bring up the calendar, and a larger clock will appear above it. This enhanced time display is not limited to multi-monitor setups—it will also appear on the primary monitor in future versions.
