Currently, Microsoft delivers a variety of information to Windows 11 users via the MSN News feed, displayed within the widgets panel upon user interaction. However, the company is now poised to reimagine this news experience by integrating Copilot AI into the interface.
At present, the content shown within the news module is primarily sourced from Microsoft’s MSN feed, which curates articles based on user interests and tailors recommendations by region. As a result, users in different locations receive distinct news content.
According to a report by Windows Central, Microsoft is actively working to incorporate Copilot AI into the widgets panel. Specifically, the company plans to replace the current MSN News module with a new AI-driven experience called “Copilot Discover.”
Copilot Discover leverages artificial intelligence to recommend personalized content based on a user’s interaction patterns, encouraging deeper engagement and driving traffic to the MSN website—where Microsoft monetizes through advertisements.
The report further suggests that this new AI-powered news feed offers improved responsiveness over the current MSN feed. Enhancements include smoother animations, reduced scroll lag, and auto-playing embedded videos as users browse. Additionally, the notification feature will surface breaking news and real-time stock market fluctuations.
In essence, while Microsoft is shifting the underlying technology powering the news module, the core content will still originate from the MSN platform. Clicking on headlines will continue to redirect users to the MSN website, although some articles may now load directly within the widget interface without launching a browser.
Naturally, not all users welcome such integrated information feeds. For those who prefer a cleaner desktop experience, Microsoft allows the news feature—and even the entire widgets panel—to be disabled and hidden from the taskbar altogether.
