Revamped "Start" Menu Interface
If your laptop is equipped with an NPU unit, you can take advantage of the newly introduced Recall feature in the latest version of Windows 11, which is powered by artificial intelligence. This feature periodically captures screenshots of your screen every few minutes, analyzes the content, and organizes it into a timeline. Users can later retrieve specific moments and content through the Recall interface with remarkable ease.
Under normal circumstances, the snapshots captured by Recall are not accessible for direct viewing by the user. However, in response to regulatory requirements from the European Union, Microsoft has introduced a snapshot export function in the Windows 11 preview update KB5060816, allowing users to export and share these snapshots with third parties.
This capability is exclusively available to users residing within the European Union or the European Economic Area. Users in other countries or regions will not receive this feature and are not permitted to export Recall data to local storage or share it through alternative means.
Due to security and privacy considerations, the Recall export process is intentionally complex. During the initial export, Recall generates a dedicated export code, which is displayed only once. Users must safeguard this code diligently; without it, future exports are impossible. The only recourse in such cases would be to erase all data and reset Recall entirely.
Microsoft has stated that users can choose to export snapshots from the past seven days, one month, or from the entire duration since Recall was activated. Once exported and saved to an external folder, users have the discretion to copy or share the data at their own risk.
For added convenience, Microsoft also offers an automatic export option. All exported snapshots are encrypted and require the original export code for decryption. Furthermore, enterprise IT administrators can configure this functionality using a new “Allow Recall Export” option within Group Policy. By default, this export feature is disabled on corporate devices.
Naturally, in light of potential security concerns, we recommend against exporting or sharing snapshots with third parties. Screenshots may contain a significant amount of private information, and sharing them without careful review could inadvertently lead to personal data breaches.
