Revamped "Start" Menu Interface
According to Microsoft’s support document KB5072911 — a support bulletin rather than a cumulative update — the company has acknowledged that Windows 11 version 24H2 may exhibit numerous issues after installing the July 2025 update KB5062553. In other words, any system updated on or after July 8, 2025 may encounter these problems.
The documentation suggests that nearly every core function of Windows 11 is affected. Although the bulletin is written for version 24H2, the 25H2 release shares the same underlying core, meaning both 24H2 and 25H2 systems may experience these failures.
Microsoft states in the support document: “After provisioning a PC with a Windows 11, version 24H2 monthly cumulative update released on or after July 2025 (KB5062553), various apps such as StartMenuExperiencehost, Search, SystemSettings, Taskbar or Explorer might experience difficulties.“
The root cause lies in updates to Windows XAML components and packages, including MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS_cw5n1h2txyewy, Microsoft.UI.Xaml.CBS_8wekyb3d8bbwe, and MicrosoftWindows.Client.Core_cw5n1h2txyewy.
Users may encounter the following symptoms, among others:
- File Explorer process crashes
- Crashes of the system core process shellhost.exe
- Failures within StartMenuExperienceHost
- System Settings failing to launch with no error message
- Application crashes during XAML view initialization
- File Explorer running without its window button appearing on the taskbar
- Failures in other XAML Island view initializations
- Issues affecting ImmersiveShell
- The Start Menu refusing to open and presenting a critical error
Microsoft has already provided a temporary workaround. Users who experience these issues frequently may refer to the PowerShell commands listed in the support document to mitigate the problem.
