Microsoft has just released a new version for the Windows 11 Insider Preview channels, introducing an updated File Explorer menu—an enhancement announced at the Build 2025 Developer Conference. This update aims to allow users to seamlessly invoke local AI capabilities while managing files within File Explorer.
The supported preview builds include Windows 11 Dev Build 26200.5603 (KB5058488) and Windows 11 Beta Build 26120.4151 (KB5058486). Users enrolled in these preview channels will notice the changes to the File Explorer menu upon updating to the latest version.
The newly introduced AI actions currently support a range of image-related functionalities: users can select an image file and launch a Bing Image Search, replace backgrounds within the Photos app, erase objects using the same app, or remove backgrounds in Paint. For now, these capabilities are limited to image file types.
While these applications already integrate AI-powered features, it is important to note that despite being locally triggered, the actual image processing often leverages cloud-based resources. Consequently, Microsoft imposes usage quotas on certain operations, limiting the frequency of AI feature activation.
According to Microsoft’s roadmap, forthcoming additions to the AI Actions menu will include deeper integration with Microsoft 365. For instance, selecting a DOCX document will enable AI-powered summarization, FAQ generation, and more.
Most of the options presented through the AI Actions menu mirror functionalities available in tools like Microsoft Copilot. Microsoft’s goal is to streamline user workflows by embedding AI access directly into familiar interfaces, ultimately increasing adoption and utility of these intelligent features.
These capabilities are currently being tested in the Windows 11 Insider Preview builds and are expected to roll out to the stable release channel within one to three months. Users not enrolled in the preview program need not worry—these enhancements will become available through future official updates.
