Revamped "Start" Menu Interface
Between 2024 and 2025, Microsoft progressively refined the Windows 11 Start menu by introducing a grid-based arrangement, thereby eliminating the necessity of navigating subordinate menus to access applications. This enhancement allows users to traverse their entire software library through a seamless, scrollable list.
However, as the current Start menu exists as a hybrid construct—amalgamating native architecture with WebView2—the operational performance remains notably lackluster. Furthermore, several interface parameters remain beyond user agency; for instance, the system dictates compact or expansive layouts based on display resolution without permitting manual overrides.
According to a report by Windows Central, Microsoft is presently architecting a revitalized Start menu designed to prioritize peak performance and furnish users with granular control over their environment. The primary technical endeavor involves transitioning the menu from its current hybrid state to a purely native WinUI 3 framework. In prior communications, Microsoft has pledged that this architectural migration will catalyze a markedly more responsive user experience.
Under this new paradigm, the Start menu is expected to exhibit near-instantaneous responsiveness. Microsoft’s objective is to ensure the menu remains agile even under conditions of extreme system latency, thereby preventing the one-to-two-second delays that frequently plague the interface during periods of high CPU utilization.
The forthcoming iteration will reportedly adopt a modular design philosophy, empowering users to toggle specific functional segments according to their preferences. This includes the ability to manually select layout dimensions or entirely decommission underutilized elements, such as the “Recommended” file section. If they so desire, users may even disable the comprehensive application list, granting them the freedom to curate their workspace as they see fit.
Windows Central further elucidates that this initiative, operating under the codename Windows K2, represents a renewed dedication to ensuring that Windows 11 evolves into an exceptionally swift, fluid, stable, and user-centric platform.
