In the latest release of the Windows 11 Insider Preview, Microsoft has introduced a more convenient network speed testing feature. It is located in the system tray on the right side of the taskbar, within the network icon. Users can initiate a test simply by right-clicking the network symbol.
For those connected via Wi-Fi, clicking the Wi-Fi icon reveals a button in the dropdown list that also triggers the test. Yet there is a frustrating caveat: this is not a native Windows feature.
In practice, when the user selects the speed test option, the system automatically launches Microsoft Edge and opens Bing’s built-in speed test—essentially the same as searching for “internet speed test” on Bing. Since Bing relies on SpeedTest for its measurements, there is little concern over accuracy. The issue, however, is that it does not function natively within Windows, making it no different from manually searching on any browser.

A truly integrated feature would have been far more seamless—allowing users to simply click a button and see results within seconds. Instead, each test redirects through Microsoft Edge, which diminishes the overall experience.
This feature is already available in the Windows 11 Beta, Dev, and Canary builds and is expected to roll out soon to the stable release. Once it does, users on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 will also be able to take advantage of the new functionality.
