Nikita Bier, the product lead at X, has announced the inauguration of a transformative feature designated as “Custom Timelines.” Characterized by the platform as one of its most monumental evolutionary shifts to date, this update empowers users to anchor specific subjects of interest to their primary interface and navigate between them with seamless fluidity. However, as competitors such as Bluesky and Threads have long since implemented analogous functionalities—and given that the current rollout is restricted to Premium subscribers on iOS—the announcement may elicit a tepid response from the broader user base.
According to Bier, the architecture of Custom Timelines represents a formidable engineering undertaking spanning several months. Its operational logic transcends rudimentary keyword filtering; instead, it leverages Grok AI to achieve a profound semantic understanding of every post, harmonizing this intelligence with algorithmic precision to curate bespoke content recommendations. Currently, the system offers a diverse palette of 75 thematic categories, ranging from culinary arts and photography to commerce, finance, and cinematography. Users may select and “pin” these themes to their home tabs, with the system’s predictive accuracy purportedly intensifying as it learns from the user’s patterns of engagement.
Undeniably, X’s chronological progress significantly lags behind its contemporaries. The decentralized platform Bluesky pioneered hyper-transparent “Custom Feeds” as early as 2023, while Meta’s Threads introduced topic-based pinning in 2024. X’s decision to follow suit only in 2026—and to sequester the feature within an “Early Access” tier for paying members—underscores a sluggish developmental cadence and a business model increasingly reliant on gatekeeping core functionalities. Consequently, Android enthusiasts and non-subscribers must endure a protracted wait to experience the revamped interface.
Complementing the custom timelines, Nikita Bier unveiled a supplementary utility designed to enhance digital tranquility: “Snooze Topics.” This instrument allows users to temporarily suppress specific themes within their “For You” feed—such as pervasive political discourse or redundant sporting events—effectively banishing them for a 24-hour duration. Much like the Custom Timelines, the “Snooze” functionality is presently an exclusive privilege for Premium subscribers on iOS and web platforms, leaving Android and free-tier users in a state of suspended anticipation.
