To curb abuse and the generation of falsified data, Elon Musk’s social media platform X/Twitter is removing two key functions from its free-tier API: likes and follows. After this change, developers will no longer be able to programmatically like posts or follow accounts through the API.
According to X/Twitter, the reduction in permissions is intended to shield users from spam, bots, and manipulative activities that degrade the overall experience—essentially targeting those who exploit free APIs to fabricate inauthentic engagement.
Paid subscription plans—Basic, Pro, and Enterprise—remain unaffected by the adjustment. These higher-priced tiers continue to offer broader functionality, faster request limits, and additional premium features.
Twitter’s API was originally free of charge, but following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform, a new pricing model was introduced in the spring of 2023. The update ended free access and imposed steep fees, which led many companies, including miHoYo, to discontinue their X/Twitter quick-login integrations.
While the paid tiers were largely designed as a revenue-generating strategy, Musk did provide a limited free API with heavily restricted functionality, primarily aimed at “good” bots—such as automated accounts delivering weather forecasts.
In October 2024, X further revised its Basic API pricing, doubling the monthly fee from $100 to $200. However, the price hike was accompanied by higher rate limits, granting developers expanded access to platform data.
