“X” (formerly Twitter) has formally unveiled its long-promised new messaging platform, announcing on November 15 that the existing Direct Messages service will be replaced by a feature simply called Chat. This major update introduces a full suite of capabilities long standard in other mainstream messaging apps, including voice and video calling, file sharing, message editing and deletion, as well as enhanced privacy features such as end-to-end encryption and screenshot notifications.
According to X, the new Chat platform will begin rolling out immediately to users on iOS and the web, while the Android version is marked as “coming soon.”
The company also revealed that it is developing a voice memo feature, which will allow users to exchange audio messages in the future.
The rollout of Chat has not been without challenges. Earlier this year, X launched a preliminary version of encrypted messaging, only to suspend it in May due to unspecified issues. The newly released version appears to resolve several of the earlier limitations.
Technical documentation published by X indicates that both group messages and media files can now be encrypted. However, the company notes that metadata is not yet encrypted, meaning that intermediary information—including recipient details—remains unprotected. X adds that it is currently developing tools to help users verify the authenticity of encrypted conversations.
