Chromebooks can also run Linux programs. This possibility was already implied in February last year, but with the emergence of terminal applications in the development channel of the Chrome OS, this situation may soon come. The current irony is that this Linux-based Chrome operating system does not support running Linux applications. Just like Android, which uses the Linux kernel, Google has also modified it so that it has almost no Linux appearance.
However, during the upcoming integration process, the Chrome OS may soon run Linux software directly and open the operating system and Chromebook to educational or non-business use cases. Currently, some Reddit users have discovered and confirmed that the latest beta version of the Chrome OS comes with a terminal application and advertises that the new version can run your favorite native applications and command line tools, warning that 200 MB is needed to install the terminal application.
However, clicking “Install” now ends in failure only. In fact, there is already a terminal application that can be installed, which means that the functionality is already available, at least for alpha and beta testing. This 200 MB package confirms that this Linux implementation is based on virtual machines and is almost the same as the “Crostini” we heard a few months ago. This virtual machine strategy is actually similar to the one done by Microsoft using the Windows Linux subsystem.
The arrival of Linux support on the Chrome OS changed the operating system’s narrative. Mainly for school and office use, this may make Chrome OS branch out of a new developer market. Especially those who only need a Web browser and some Linux-based tools to create software developers like Web applications.
