RISC-V’s open source architecture impacts chip design

Today’s mainstream chip architectures are ARM and x86. If a company wants to invest in developing its chip, it can choose to pay millions of dollars to ARM developer Arm Holding for authorisation, and x86 is not at all because Intel only licenses x86 to AMD. But now a freely usable open source architecture, RISC-V, has attracted more and more attention from enterprises.

Nvidia and Western Digital have chosen to use RISC-V for internally developed chips. Western Digital said the company would announce RISC-V processors for hard drives in 2019 or 2020. Nvidia also uses the RISC-V processor for its graphics card. The startup GreenWaves Technologies chose the RISC-V architecture to develop chips for the Internet of Things. It decided an unlicensed open source architecture to avoid the need to finance too much money. It has already produced chip samples. RISC-V open source architecture reduces the cost of creating custom chips for enterprises, which means that more and more companies may choose open source architecture to develop custom chips in the future. It will bring more competition to ARM and Intel, which currently dominate the chip market.
