In a recent blog post, Google revealed that “in the last 12 months, fraudsters have used advanced AI tools to create more convincing schemes, resulting in over $400 billion in stolen funds globally.” To counter this escalating wave of digital deception, the company outlined how Android’s multi-layered protections now block over 10 billion suspected malicious calls and messages every month, preventing scams before they reach users.
Android’s anti-fraud systems combine on-device AI, real-time behavioral analysis, and network-level protections to intercept threats at multiple stages. According to Google, the platform’s RCS (Rich Communication Services) safety checks alone “blocked over 100 million suspicious numbers from using RCS” in the past month — a preemptive move that stops scams from ever being delivered.
To demonstrate Android’s effectiveness, Google worked with independent researchers and users worldwide to evaluate how Android and iOS compare in defending against modern text scams. Android users not only faced fewer fraudulent messages but also expressed stronger confidence in their devices’ ability to protect them.
In a YouGov survey of 5,000 smartphone users across the U.S., India, and Brazil, Android users consistently reported stronger protection outcomes:
- 58% more likely than iOS users to say they received no scam texts in the past week.
- 96% higher confidence among Pixel users compared to iPhone owners, reporting zero scam messages.
- iOS users were 65% more likely than Android users to experience three or more scam texts per week.
- Android users were 20% more likely to rate their scam protection as “very effective” or “extremely effective,” while iPhone users were 150% more likely to say their device was not effective at all against mobile fraud.
These findings reflect Android’s shift toward AI-driven security, where on-device intelligence detects conversational scam patterns — such as “pig butchering” and phishing attempts — in real time.
Google’s post detailed how its layered defense system proactively stops scams across both messages and phone calls:
- Message Protection: “Google Messages automatically filters known spam by analyzing sender reputation and message content,” moving suspicious texts into the spam folder. For more complex threats, on-device AI analyzes messages from unknown senders for scam patterns, providing real-time warnings without sending data off the device.
- Call Protection: “Phone by Google automatically blocks known spam calls so your phone never even rings.” If a suspicious caller gets through, Call Screen can answer on the user’s behalf to identify potential fraudsters. During live calls, Android’s Scam Detection feature monitors for risky social engineering tactics — like requests to install untrusted apps or disable security settings — and immediately warns users.
These protections are bolstered by Google Play Protect’s real-time app scanning and Chrome’s Safe Browsing, which now leverage large language models (LLMs) to identify phishing and malware sites more accurately than ever.
