Within the Android ecosystem, numerous Google services operate in the background—some with a user interface, others entirely invisible to the end user. Google has now announced the introduction of a dedicated System Services settings page designed to display and consolidate these essential components.
This new settings page will enumerate all Google-provided services and applications, many of which lack standalone user interfaces. These services are instrumental in ensuring the smooth functioning of the Android system, and the new interface aims to enhance transparency while simplifying centralized management.
It is important to note that most of these services cannot be uninstalled and do not offer interactive elements. As such, the System Services page primarily serves as an informational hub. Tapping on each entry will present a concise description, allowing users to better understand the function and significance of each service.
Currently listed system services include:
- Adaptive Connective Services
- Android System Intelligence: Live Caption, Smart Reply, more
- Android System Key Verifier: Coming to Google Messages
- Android System SafetyCore: Sensitive Content Warnings in Google Messages
- Cross-Device Services: Android app streaming on Chromebooks
- Device Connectivity Service: Notification sync between the Pixel Tablet and phones
- Device Health Services
- Google Play services: Fast Pair, Quick Share, Unknown Tracker Alerts
- Google Play Services for AR: ARCore
- Settings Services
These system services typically receive automatic updates via the Google Play Store on a monthly basis. Manual updates are not required, and Google strongly advises against disabling, removing, or interfering with these services, as doing so may adversely affect device performance and stability.
The new System Services settings page is being rolled out to devices running Android 6.0 and later, meaning that the vast majority of current Android users will gain access to this feature following the latest system update—provided the device is compatible and has the Google Play Store installed.
