As previously rumored, Apple has officially confirmed that all of its operating systems will adopt a unified version number—“26”—corresponding to the upcoming year 2026. Alongside this change, Apple will introduce an entirely new design language across its platforms, aptly named Liquid Glass.
The decision to align version numbers with calendar years reflects Apple’s intention to simplify version identification, making it easier for users to determine how current their operating systems are.
This marks Apple’s most significant visual overhaul since the introduction of iOS 7 in 2013, which pioneered a flat design aesthetic. The Liquid Glass design language draws inspiration from the visual properties of layered glass—imbuing the user interface with a sense of depth, luster, and semi-transparency. Users will even have the option to render interface elements entirely translucent, embracing a minimalist, ethereal aesthetic.
This new design paradigm is clearly influenced by the interface concepts introduced in visionOS. It aims to establish a cohesive visual experience across iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS. The interface dynamically adapts to system themes, adjusting brightness, opacity, and layering based on contextual cues. Interactions are accompanied by delicate light refractions that mimic the edges of real glass, while core interface elements are rendered as stacked, transparent layers.
Beyond the operating system itself, Liquid Glass will also permeate Apple’s native applications—such as Camera, Photos, Safari, FaceTime, Apple Music, Apple News, and Apple Podcasts. To foster visual consistency, Apple will provide developers with new design tools, enabling them to redesign app icons and interfaces in alignment with the new aesthetic.
The newly announced iOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26, macOS 26, and iPadOS 26 are available as developer previews starting today. A public beta is expected to launch in July, with the official release slated for this fall—coinciding with the debut of Apple’s next-generation iPhone and related hardware.
