Following the introduction of the AI Overviews feature last year, Google has now announced an expansion of its capabilities with the introduction of an “AI Mode” tab. This enhancement allows users to engage in interactive, chat-based searches, making it easier to explore online content, refine search results, and ask follow-up questions.
AI Mode functions similarly to a chatbot, enabling users to retrieve extensive information from the web in a conversational manner. This approach positions the feature as a potential competitor to AI-driven services offered by companies such as OpenAI.
At its core, AI Mode is powered by a customized version of Google’s Gemini 2.0 AI model. Alongside this update, Google has also transitioned the AI model behind AI Overviews to Gemini 2.0, improving search efficiency and enhancing the accuracy of content summaries.
In terms of functionality, AI Mode operates similarly to Google’s previously introduced Deep Research feature. However, the key distinction lies in how searches are conducted—AI Mode primarily relies on user-inputted keywords rather than requiring detailed research descriptions. Additionally, its search scope is narrower compared to Deep Research, allowing for faster response times and more immediate search results.
Google has also observed that user behavior in early AI Mode testing differs from traditional keyword-based search engine interactions. Instead of merely inputting direct or fuzzy-matched keywords, users tend to phrase their queries in full statements. This enables AI Mode to comprehend intent more effectively, retrieve relevant answers, and provide contextual follow-up responses.
For now, AI Mode will initially be available only in the United States and exclusively for Google One AI Premium subscribers. The feature will be accessible across both desktop and mobile devices, with future updates expected to introduce richer content presentations, including comparative charts and more comprehensive data visualization.
