At CES 2026 this year, Boston Dynamics announced a strategic partnership with its βformer parent,β Google DeepMind. Under this collaboration, Google DeepMindβs advanced Gemini Robotics foundation models will be integrated into Boston Dynamicsβ next-generation Atlas humanoid robot.
The two companies plan to launch a joint research program in the coming months, with the ambition of creating what they describe as an ultimate robotβone that combines the most advanced βcerebellumβ for motion control with the most powerful βbrainβ for AI-driven reasoning.
Boston Dynamics has long been renowned for the extraordinary balance, agility, and locomotion of its robots, and is widely regarded as a leader in robotic motion control. Google, meanwhile, continues to lead the field of multimodal AI. Its Gemini Robotics models are purpose-built for robots, endowing them with the ability to perceive their surroundings, reason about complex situations, use tools, and interact naturally with humans.
The new-generation Atlas humanoid robot unveiled at CES this week also boasts formidable hardware capabilities. It is equipped with human-scale robotic hands, rotary joints, and tactile sensing, enabling it to lift objects weighing up to 110 pounds (approximately 50 kilograms). Through this partnership, Atlas will not only move with exceptional dexterity, but also think with far greater intelligence. Driving this collaboration behind the scenes is Boston Dynamicsβ current parent company, Hyundai Motor Group.
According to official statements, the initial phase of the partnership will focus on industrial applications, with automotive manufacturing as the primary testing ground. Hyundai plans to begin factory trials of the Gemini-powered Atlas later this year, with the goal of deploying the robots on production lines by 2028 to handle tasks such as sorting componentsβwork that demands both fine motor skills and contextual judgment.
