The core function of Google Translate has always been cross-language translation, yet in recent years the service has steadily gained additional features such as pronunciation guides and translation history. Now, however, a truly significant enhancement is on the horizon.
According to a teardown analysis published by Android Police, Google Translate is preparing to introduce AI-enhanced translation capabilities, including the option to choose between different AI models for translations, as well as a gamified language-learning and practice mode.
The analysis of the installation package reveals that the Google Translate interface will feature a model selector, with two options currently supported: Fast and Advanced. The Fast model appears intended for routine translation tasks, while the Advanced mode may leverage Googleβs Gemini AI service for more precise comprehension of text and conversational context.
Another upcoming feature is a practice mode, which gamifies language learning in a style reminiscent of Duolingo, allowing users to engage in mini-games directly within Google Translate to improve their language skills.
Given Google Translateβs vast user base, this development could pose a serious challenge to Duolingo. After all, the features provided by Google Translate will almost certainly be free of charge, without the need for any subscription, which is likely to entice users to learn languages directly through Google Translate rather than downloading separate apps.
At present, during the testing phase, the advanced translation model supports only EnglishβSpanish and EnglishβFrench language pairs. However, since these translations are powered by AI models, it is expected that support for a broad range of additional languages will follow in due course.
