Currently, ChatGPT boasts over 900 million weekly active users. However, the consumer artificial intelligence sector remains intensely competitive. Consequently, ChatGPT’s market share slips below 50% for first time. Meanwhile, Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude show incredibly robust growth. Conversely, assistants like Grok maintain a market share below 5 percent.
Astonishing Growth Rates Continue
ChatGPT holds the record as the fastest application to reach one billion monthly users. Nevertheless, OpenAI officially tracks weekly active engagement. According to recent data, weekly users hit 900 million in February. Furthermore, actual monthly active users now exceed 1.1 billion. This figure vastly overshadows Gemini‘s 662 million and Claude’s 245 million users.
In January, ChatGPT maintained a dominant market share above 50 percent. However, Sensor Tower data reveals a significant shift. By late May 2026, its share fell to 46.4 percent. Simultaneously, Gemini climbed to 27.7 percent. Likewise, Claude expanded its reach to 10.3 percent. Other AI assistants, including Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Meta AI, each hold less than 5 percent.
Users Freely Switch Assistants
Interestingly, consumers frequently utilize multiple AI platforms simultaneously. They readily switch between different assistants based on immediate needs. For instance, ChatGPT experienced a massive surge in uninstalls recently. This occurred after OpenAI finalized a controversial agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense in February. In contrast, Gemini sustains rapid expansion due to deep ecosystem integration. Users willingly adopt Gemini to enhance Gmail, Workspace, and Drive.
Premium Subscriptions Drive Revenue
Regarding monetization, American consumers increasingly utilize AI to boost productivity. Therefore, they willingly pay for advanced, premium capabilities. This profitable trend will likely accelerate in the future. For example, users purchase ChatGPT subscriptions for increased usage limits and deep research tools. Similarly, developers subscribe to Claude to leverage Claude Code for programming.
Furthermore, current statistics indicate Claude commands the highest conversion rate. On average, 13 out of every 100 users maintain a paid subscription. Consequently, this impressive monetization rate sparks intense envy among competitors. Moreover, Claude currently boasts the highest overall retention rate for both free and paid tiers.
