Dashlane, the password manager previously offering a free tier, has announced that it will discontinue its free plan. Users must upgrade to a Dashlane Premium or Friends & Family subscription by September 16, 2025—meaning continued use will require payment.
In an email notification, Dashlane stated that existing free users will be automatically upgraded to a trial version of selected premium features starting August 5. During the trial, there will be no limits on stored passwords, keys, or logged-in devices. Once the trial ends, restrictions will be reinstated unless users subscribe.
Neither the email nor the official blog post provided an explanation for discontinuing the free version. Dashlane’s free tier was already limited, and in 2023, the company further reduced its quota, restricting free accounts to storing only 25 passwords.
For paid plans, Dashlane offers two options:
- Dashlane Premium: $4.99/month
- Dashlane Friends & Family: $7.49/month
Both plans include unlimited passwords, keys, device logins, secure sharing, dark web monitoring, and real-time phishing alerts. Premium additionally offers a VPN option, which the Friends & Family plan omits. However, the latter supports up to 10 members, making it cost-effective for group use.
Free-tier users should begin migration preparations promptly. Those unwilling to pay may consider open-source alternatives like Bitwarden or KeePass, both of which are free—though their feature sets may be more modest.
Additionally, 1Password is currently offering a one-year free trial of its Family plan. Users seeking a transitional solution can export their credentials from Dashlane to 1Password and take advantage of the year-long period before deciding on a permanent alternative.
