According to a report by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple appears to have abandoned the Mac Pro. The company’s most powerful workstation—last refreshed in 2023 with the M2 Ultra chip—now seems unlikely to receive further updates in the foreseeable future.
Gurman notes that Apple has not only scrapped development of the planned M4 Ultra processor, but has also cancelled the corresponding Mac Pro refresh that was originally set to feature that chip.
As a result, Apple’s next Ultra-class processor will be the M5 Ultra, intended solely for the forthcoming Mac Studio—strongly suggesting that no new Mac Pro will appear in Apple’s 2026 product roadmap.
Gurman further cites internal sources who say Apple views the Mac Studio as the “present and future” of its professional desktop strategy. The machine offers formidable computational power in a compact form factor, one that can be deployed far more flexibly across various professional environments than the Mac Pro, making it a more compelling target for continued development.
Although Apple has not completely ruled out the possibility of a future Mac Pro, current strategy indicates that the M2 Ultra model may well be the final iteration of the line. For professionals who require absolute peak performance, the Mac Studio has clearly become the sole product Apple intends to advance.
