Mozilla’s open-source Firefox browser has announced that Firefox for iOS is testing a native ad-blocking tool. Users will no longer need to install extensions or third-party utilities to enjoy a cleaner, uncluttered browsing experience within Firefox itself.
Among mainstream browsers, Firefox is currently the only one offering a built-in, native ad blocker on iOS. Google Chrome does not support ad blocking at all, while Safari and others require users to install separate extensions to achieve the same effect. That said, Firefox’s built-in ad-blocking efficiency may not fully match that of dedicated, purpose-built ad-blocking extensions.
Google Search Ads Remain Unblocked
Mozilla explains that the ad-blocking tool in Firefox for iOS operates at the network level, drawing on the industry-standard EasyList filter list to block ads before they ever load. The feature is disabled by default; users must navigate to Settings, then Browsing, then Content, and enable the ad blocker option manually.
Mozilla is also careful to note that this native ad-blocking feature is not yet perfect. Because different websites employ different techniques to serve advertisements, the tool may fail to block every ad it encounters. Notably, Firefox’s own support documentation confirms that the browser will not block ads displayed on search results pages – including those shown on Google Search – nor will it block Firefox’s own sponsored content placements.
A Phased Rollout to iOS Users
The native ad-blocking feature in Firefox for iOS is currently in testing, with Mozilla stating that it is being rolled out to users gradually. Users can check Settings to see whether the ad blocker option has appeared on their device; its absence simply means the feature has not yet reached that user. Mozilla needs to gather usage data for evaluation purposes, and no timeline has been set for a full, universal rollout.
