Google has recently and quietly released an application on GitHub titled Google AI Edge Gallery, enabling users to run AI models—hosted on the Hugging Face platform—directly on Android devices. An iOS version is also in development.
These AI models function entirely on-device, without requiring an internet connection, thereby safeguarding users’ personal data from being uploaded to the cloud and reducing the risk of privacy breaches. Moreover, the application is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing for broad usage across various scenarios, including commercial deployment, without legal restrictions.
Currently, Google AI Edge Gallery remains experimental and is available in an alpha release, downloadable through GitHub. Upon launching the app, users are greeted with a home interface presenting a range of AI-powered features, such as image recognition or conversational AI. Selecting a function reveals a curated list of suitable AI models.
In addition, the app features a tool called Prompt Lab, which allows users to execute AI models for specific tasks using prompts—such as summarizing lengthy texts or rewriting content. This function supports multitask operations and enables users to fine-tune the output of the models.
Since the models run locally on various mobile devices, Google notes that performance will vary depending on the hardware and the complexity of the AI models employed.
