In iOS 26 Beta 1, Apple introduced a new feature called Recovery Assistant. In the recently released Beta 2, Apple provided further details: Recovery Assistant is designed to facilitate system restoration when a device fails to boot properly.
According to the update notes, Recovery Assistant can automatically detect issues and attempt to resolve them. Should a startup problem occur, an iPhone running iOS 26 will automatically enter recovery mode. Upon doing so, the screen will display the following message: “This iPhone encountered an issue while starting. To aid in diagnosing and resolving it, it has booted into Recovery. Recovery will look for any problems and attempt to resolve them if found.”
Notably, the new Recovery Assistant allows firmware restoration via wireless connection using another functioning Apple device, such as an iPhone or iPad.

Previously, in cases of severe malfunction, users were required to connect their iPhones to a Mac or PC and rely on tools like iTunes to perform a system restore—often involving the download of firmware over the internet. However, not all users have immediate access to a Mac or PC during such emergencies.
The hallmark of this new Recovery Assistant lies in its ability to leverage another Apple device—such as an iPhone or iPad—as a substitute for a Mac or PC during the restoration process. Users on Reddit have already reported successful attempts at restoring a malfunctioning iPhone using an iPad.
When using an iPhone or iPad to assist in the restoration, the supporting device must first download the necessary firmware from the internet, after which the firmware is wirelessly transmitted to the affected iPhone for recovery.
Last year, Apple introduced a feature allowing wireless firmware updates for iPhones, primarily aimed at Apple retail stores, enabling iOS upgrades without opening the device’s packaging. Recovery Assistant builds upon this innovation, offering a similarly seamless wireless approach to firmware restoration.
