The integrated development environment (IDE) tools vendor JetBrains has announced changes to its LSP API—the Language Server Protocol interface—which will now be made available free of charge.
In July 2025, JetBrains revealed a shift in the distribution model for IntelliJ IDEA, combining the paid edition and the free Community edition into a single installation package. Users who activate a paid subscription from within the Community edition gain access to advanced features, while those whose subscriptions expire are automatically reverted to the free Community edition. This edition offers a core set of essential functionalities, and from now on, the LSP API will be included as part of these free capabilities.
Beginning with version 2025.2, the LSP API will be offered as part of the limited feature set available in fallback mode. By making it freely accessible, JetBrains enables plugin developers who rely on the LSP API to deliver plugins that seamlessly serve both paid and free users.
However, JetBrains noted that the LSP API in IntelliJ IDEA Community 2025.2 will eventually be deprecated (though it remains usable for now). The company further emphasized that the LSP API cannot fully replace the PSI (Program Structure Interface), which remains the foundational platform powering all advanced features of IntelliJ IDEA.
In addition, the IntelliJ Platform API already provides a broad range of capabilities, including support for parsed code completion, navigation to definitions, hover documentation, diagnostics, code actions, quick fixes, and document formatting.
