Apple has recently released the macOS Tahoe 26.2 Developer Beta, within which a new feature known as “Edge Light” has been discovered—an illumination enhancement designed to resolve the persistent lighting challenges users face during video conferences.
In essence, Edge Light allows a MacBook’s display to function as a virtual ring light during video calls. Once activated, a rectangular band of light radiates from the edges of the screen to provide illumination. More impressively, the feature integrates Apple’s Neural Engine, enabling the system to automatically detect the user’s facial position in the video frame and dynamically adjust the light projection to ensure optimal lighting at all times.
From a usability standpoint, Edge Light offers color-temperature controls, allowing users to warm or cool the light according to their environment. The system also supports automation, enabling the feature to turn on automatically when ambient lighting becomes insufficient.
To avoid disrupting normal workflows, the Edge Light band is thoughtfully designed not to obscure the Menu Bar. Even better, when the user’s cursor approaches the illuminated edge, the light automatically retreats to prevent interference with on-screen interactions.
It is worth noting that this feature is not available on all Mac models. According to Apple, all Macs equipped with Apple Silicon and released in 2024 or later will support Edge Light, with the system capable of activating the feature automatically when it detects a low-light environment. Compatible Macs connected to a Studio Display—or using an external webcam that meets the necessary specifications—can also take advantage of Edge Light.
Although this feature may not completely replace a professional physical ring light, it certainly offers a far more elegant and integrated alternative compared with makeshift solutions of the past, such as opening blank Google Docs pages or empty browser windows merely to brighten one’s face.
