Mattel, the American toy giant behind iconic brands such as Barbie and Hot Wheels, has announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI to integrate generative artificial intelligence into its product lines. Through this collaboration, toys like Barbie will be enhanced with AI-driven natural language capabilities, enabling more intuitive and engaging interactions with users.
Mattel stated that it will leverage OpenAI’s technologies to tailor AI applications to age-appropriate play experiences, emphasizing a commitment to innovation while maintaining the highest standards of user privacy and data security. Additionally, the company plans to adopt advanced AI tools, including ChatGPT Enterprise, to enhance its internal operations, streamline product development, and foster creative ideation.
“We’re pleased to work with Mattel as it moves to introduce thoughtful AI-powered experiences and products into its iconic brands, while also providing its employees the benefits of ChatGPT. With OpenAI, Mattel has access to an advanced set of AI capabilities alongside new tools to enable productivity, creativity, and company-wide transformation at scale,” said Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI.
Josh Silverman, Chief Franchise Officer at Mattel, added, “Each of our products and experiences is designed to inspire fans, entertain audiences, and enrich lives through play. AI has the power to expand on that mission and broaden the reach of our brands in new and exciting ways. Our work with OpenAI will enable us to leverage new technologies to solidify our leadership in innovation and reimagine new forms of play.”
Mattel and OpenAI will jointly develop a range of AI-powered products and experiences, with the first wave expected to launch by the end of the year. However, specific details about the initial offerings have yet to be disclosed.
