Meta is reportedly in active negotiations to acquire AI video generation startup Pika Labs, aiming to accelerate its expansion in the short-form video and generative AI space while reinforcing its dominance across creator-driven and content-centric platforms.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Meta has initiated preliminary discussions with Pika Labs regarding a potential acquisition or a strategic technology licensing agreementβunderscoring Metaβs growing interest in the AI video generation market. The tech giant had also previously explored collaboration with Higgsfield, another AI startup focused on creator-centric video tools, though those talks have since been discontinued.
Founded in 2023 by former Stanford AI Lab PhD students Guo Wenjing and Chenlin Meng, Pika Labs emerged with the mission to democratize video creation through generative AI. Guo and Meng left their doctoral programs to co-found the company, assuming the roles of CEO and CTO respectively. Their vision: to create an intuitive tool capable of generating high-quality short-form videos from simple text promptsβan idea that quickly captivated industry attention.
Pika Labsβ flagship model enables the creation of visually striking and stylistically diverse animationsβincluding 3D graphics, cartoon aesthetics, and photorealistic renderingβbased solely on user-input text. This dramatically lowers the barrier to video production and opens new possibilities for content creators, marketers, and social media platforms alike.
Notably, despite being less than a year old, Pika Labs has already completed three rounds of funding, raising approximately $55 million with an estimated valuation of $200β300 million. In 2024, the company successfully closed its Series B round, securing an additional $80 million and pushing its valuation close to $500 millionβa testament to its technological promise and market momentum, as evidenced by significant interest from venture capitalists.
While Meta has yet to comment on the acquisition rumors, its recent activities signal an aggressive push into AI innovation. Beyond investments in image generation, voice simulation, and AI-driven conversational tools, the company has also begun integrating AI-powered content recommendations and video creation features into Instagram and Facebook, seeking to diversify platform content and deepen user engagement.
Should the deal or partnership be finalized, Pika Labsβ cutting-edge video generation technology could be seamlessly integrated into Metaβs suite of platforms and development toolsβoffering creators an all-in-one AI-powered creative experience and positioning Meta to more directly compete with players like Google, OpenAI, and Runway in the rapidly evolving AI video arena.
