Even Microsoft itself is now retreating from the UWP architecture. In its latest support documentation, the company announced the deprecation of the UWP-based Microsoft 365 app, which is currently distributed primarily through the Microsoft Store.
Truth be told, the UWP version of Microsoft 365 has never stood out significantlyβparticularly given its slower update cadence compared to the Click-to-Run edition. As a result, all new features and improvements have consistently debuted on the Click-to-Run version first.
According to Microsoft’s announcement, functional updates for the UWP version will cease in October 2025, with security updates ending in December 2026. Therefore, users who wish to continue enjoying the latest features and maintain secure access to Microsoft 365 are encouraged to transition to the Click-to-Run version without delay.
To verify your current version, open any Microsoft 365 applicationβsuch as Wordβnavigate to Account, then About Word. If the app displays a reference to the Microsoft Store, it indicates the UWP version. Absence of this label means youβre already using the standard edition and need not worry about discontinued support.
After backing up all your document data, go to Settings on Windows 10 or 11, select Apps, then Installed Apps, and uninstall the current Microsoft 365 installation. Subsequently, download and install the Click-to-Run version to ensure continued access to updates and security enhancements.
