In 2020, Microsoft updated its Authenticator app to introduce password-saving and autofill capabilities, effectively transforming Microsoft Authenticator into a password manager with support for autofill on both iOS and Android platforms.
However, starting in June 2025, these features will begin to be phased out. All previously stored passwords will be automatically synced to Microsoft Edge. This shift signals Microsoft’s intent to consolidate password management within its browser ecosystem, effectively stripping the Authenticator app of its password manager functionality.
Here is Microsoft’s official phase-out schedule:
- Starting June 2025, you will no longer be able to save new passwords in Authenticator.
- During July 2025, you will not be able to use autofill with Authenticator.
- From August 2025, your saved passwords will no longer be accessible in Authenticator.
Despite these changes, the Authenticator app will continue to support passkey-related features. To use passkeys, users must designate Microsoft Authenticator as their passkey provider in system settings. On iOS, this can be done by navigating to Settings > Passwords > Autofill Passwords, and enabling Microsoft Authenticator as the autofill source.
On desktop, Microsoft Edge will seamlessly retrieve stored credentials to support automatic passkey autofill. In essence, users who remain within the Microsoft Edge ecosystem will experience minimal disruption. However, those using other browsers may face limitations.
For example, on iOS, users of the Chrome browser will no longer be able to access saved passwords from Microsoft Authenticator, as the app will no longer support password storage or autofill. In such cases, users are advised to switch to Chrome’s built-in password manager, iOS’s native password system, or a third-party password management solution.
On a PC, open Microsoft Edge and navigate to Settings > Profiles > Passwords. Click the small menu icon next to “Passwords” and select Export passwords. Once exported, you may import them into Chrome or another password manager of your choice.
