With Windows 10’s lifecycle nearing its end and Microsoft already rolling out the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for both home and enterprise users—enterprise coverage lasting until October 2028—the company has now announced an additional measure of support.
Microsoft has confirmed that Microsoft Edge for Windows 10 will also receive updates until October 2028, meaning the browser will continue to receive security patches for the next three years, in alignment with the ESU timeline.
Associated components such as the WebView Runtime will follow the same support schedule. For enterprise customers, this ensures that Microsoft Edge can remain in use without security concerns throughout the ESU period.
Ordinarily, browser developers offer roughly one extra year of support after an operating system reaches end-of-life, halting updates thereafter. This is because maintaining browser security becomes less meaningful when the underlying operating system is no longer patched—if the OS itself is insecure, a secure browser alone cannot fully protect users.
In this case, however, the three additional years of ESU for Windows 10 mean Microsoft will likewise extend Edge’s security updates for the same period. After October 2028, Windows 10 users will still be able to run Microsoft Edge, but it is unlikely Microsoft will continue releasing new versions.
Given Microsoft’s stance, it is expected that other major browsers—such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox—will also maintain Windows 10 support during the ESU period. For users enrolled in the ESU program, this will allow continued safe usage of both Windows 10 and their preferred browsers.
