Garmin has officially announced that Google Maps navigation is now available for free download via the Connect IQ Store on select Garmin smartwatches, offering users more immediate and convenient navigational capabilities. This integration transforms the smartwatch into an ideal companion for outdoor adventures and daily commutes.
The Google Maps service now featured on the Garmin platform delivers full route planning and navigation alerts synchronized with the user’s smartphone. Once a destination is set within the Android version of Google Maps, it automatically syncs via Bluetooth to the Garmin watch, allowing users to receive real-time turn-by-turn directions and route updates directly on their wrist.
Throughout the navigation process, the watch gently vibrates to signal upcoming turns or route changes, enabling users to stay on track without constantly glancing at their phone. A simple wrist raise reveals the path ahead, enhancing both convenience and safety while walking or cycling. For those who prefer fewer glances at the screen, an optional setting previews the next three directional prompts in advance.
At present, Google Maps on Garmin watches supports synchronization exclusively with Android devices. Although the Garmin Connect IQ app is also available on iOS, this latest update does not yet support iPhone integration.
Garmin has assured users that this new functionality does not interfere with the watch’s existing activity tracking features. During navigation, users can continue to record metrics for walking, running, cycling, and other fitness activities without disruption, ensuring a seamless and comprehensive tracking experience.
The Garmin watch models currently supporting Google Maps include select devices from the Venu, Forerunner, Vivoactive, and Fenix series. A full list of compatible models is available on the Garmin official website and the Connect IQ Store.
In addition to arriving on Garmin smartwatches, Google Maps has previously been made available on the Apple Watch and devices running the Wear OS platform—such as the Pixel Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch models that support Wear OS. These also offer offline map navigation, allowing users to navigate without needing to carry their phone.
With this latest expansion, Garmin significantly enhances the outdoor utility of its smartwatch lineup, equipping users with the convenient and reliable navigation capabilities of Google Maps for an enriched outdoor experience.
