Although Google’s Gemini AI has long been capable of analyzing images, PDF files, and even uploaded videos, support for audio files had remained absent—a disappointment for users who rely on AI to summarize meeting recordings.
Now, Google is introducing audio file support. The update has been officially confirmed by the company’s Vice President of Labs and head of the Gemini AI team, who described it as a “#1 request.” Users will be able to upload audio files through Gemini AI on the web, iOS, and Android.
Supported formats include MP3, WAV, and most other common audio types. Once uploaded, the AI can transcribe the audio into text or directly generate summaries, such as key highlights from a meeting.
Access, however, differs between free and paid tiers. Free users may upload up to 10 audio clips per session, with a combined maximum length of 10 minutes. While longer recordings can be broken into smaller segments for analysis, the limit is restrictive.
Paid subscribers—such as those on Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra plans—gain far more capacity, with the ability to upload up to three hours (180 minutes) of audio, accommodating most meeting recordings and other extended use cases.
For free users, the 10-minute cap may feel inadequate, particularly for typical meeting recordings of 30 minutes or longer. In such cases, upgrading to a paid Gemini AI subscription becomes the practical choice for those seeking greater flexibility and higher usage quotas.
