OpenAI recently announced the rollout of a new Shopping Research feature for all ChatGPT users — a tool that leverages artificial intelligence to help people select everything from home furnishings to thoughtful gifts. The feature evaluates products across numerous dimensions, including use cases, environments, user profiles, and detailed product specifications.
Users simply tell ChatGPT what they are looking for, and ChatGPT conducts the research, producing a comprehensive shopping guide designed to assist in making well-informed purchasing decisions.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT will also ask intelligent clarifying questions, delve deeply into online sources, review high-quality information, and draw on previous conversations to craft an up-to-date, personalized shopping guide.
This new capability is specifically optimized for categories where nuance matters — electronics, beauty, home and garden, kitchen appliances, and sports and outdoor equipment. In these areas, the system excels at offering product comparisons, identifying constraints, and outlining trade-offs.
Whenever a user raises a shopping-related query, ChatGPT will automatically suggest using the Shopping Research tool. Users may also manually select it via the “+” button in the conversation interface. Once activated, ChatGPT opens a visual research panel where users can provide feedback, refine preferences, and highlight the aspects they care about most.
Additionally, ChatGPT has already partnered with select merchants to enable instant purchases. If the chosen item is sold by a participating retailer, users can complete their purchase directly through ChatGPT with no additional steps.
While the Shopping Research feature is not inherently free, OpenAI is offering virtually unrestricted access during the holiday season to meet increased shopping demand. Once the holidays conclude, usage limits may be reinstated.
