OpenAI Partners with AMD, Adopting Instinct MI450 GPUs for a 6 GW AI Computing Infrastructure

OpenAI has once again expanded its AI computing empire — this time partnering not with NVIDIA, but with another semiconductor giant, AMD. Under a sweeping new agreement, OpenAI will adopt AMD’s Instinct MI450 GPUs to build an AI computing infrastructure of up to 6 gigawatts (GW), while AMD is expected to gain “tens of billions of dollars” in revenue from the collaboration.

As part of the deal, AMD will become OpenAI’s “core strategic computing partner,” assisting in the deployment of massive AI systems. OpenAI plans to utilize AMD’s Instinct GPU series, with the first batch of MI450 units scheduled for rollout in the second half of 2026 — marking the launch of the first phase of its 1 GW AI computing deployment.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman remarked that AMD’s advancements in high-performance chip technology would accelerate OpenAI’s pace of innovation, “bringing the benefits of AI to users around the world even faster.”

Beyond technological cooperation, the agreement also includes a potential equity component. OpenAI will have the opportunity to purchase up to 160 million AMD shares at a symbolic price of $0.01 per share, with the acquisition unfolding in stages as performance milestones are met. Upon full execution, OpenAI could hold as much as 10% of AMD’s equity, signifying not merely a partnership, but the formation of a long-term strategic alliance.

The timing of this deal coincides with a flurry of OpenAI’s recent collaborations across the chip industry. Only weeks ago, the company announced a $100 billion long-term investment plan with NVIDIA to construct AI data centers with a combined capacity of at least 10 GW, slated to begin deployment in late 2026.

Meanwhile, OpenAI continues to deepen its ties with Microsoft, which has invested over $13 billion and holds a 49% profit-sharing stake in the company. In parallel, NVIDIA recently invested $5 billion in Intel, paving the way for joint efforts in AI acceleration and x86 architecture integration — including the development of custom AI platforms and CPUs by Intel for NVIDIA.

Viewed as a whole, this wave of strategic alliances between chipmakers and AI powerhouses is reshaping the global landscape of AI computing. The partnership between OpenAI and AMD not only heralds a new chapter in GPU competition but also signals the dawn of a diversified, large-scale era in AI infrastructure development.
