Amid the relentless surge in global demand for AI computing, OpenAI has announced a strategic partnership with cloud services provider Oracle to expand its AI data center infrastructure within the United States. The collaboration will support the construction of a data center with an electricity capacity of 4.5 gigawatts (GW), forming a critical part of OpenAI’s ambitious “Stargate” infrastructure initiative, designed to meet the immense computational demands of its AI models.
OpenAI has already commenced development of the Stargate I data center in Abilene, Texas. With the newly announced partnership, the total projected capacity for the Stargate initiative will surpass 5 GW—enough to power more than two million AI accelerators—positioning it as one of the largest AI data center projects in the world.
The organization stated that the initiative is not only aimed at supporting the rapidly growing workloads of its generative AI models—such as ChatGPT, Codex, and Sora—but is also intended to serve as a benchmark for the next generation of AI infrastructure. To this end, OpenAI is deepening its collaboration with SoftBank to identify potential sites for additional data centers around the globe and to reimagine data center architectures with greater efficiency and sustainability in mind.
Although the financial specifics of the Oracle partnership were not officially disclosed, The Wall Street Journal reported that in June of this year, OpenAI signed a deal with Oracle worth as much as $30 billion annually, making it one of Oracle’s largest clients in history. This development signals a strategic evolution in their partnership—from cloud services to the physical underpinnings of global AI infrastructure—underscoring OpenAI’s comprehensive vision for the long-term viability of its AI offerings.
Oracle, which has been actively scaling its AI cloud services and high-performance data center deployments in recent years, stands to significantly strengthen its position in the enterprise AI computing market through this alliance. The deepening of the Stargate project is expected to further reshape the benchmarks for energy consumption and performance across the AI infrastructure supply chain, elevating the competitive dynamics between Oracle and other tech giants such as Microsoft and Google.
