In November 2025, OpenAI announced a partnership with the identity verification platform SheerID to provide a complimentary one-year ChatGPT Plus subscription to active-duty United States military personnel and those within twelve months of separation or retirement. Upon activation, beneficiaries are granted unfettered access to OpenAI’s premium subscription privileges and select priority features.
Under normal circumstances, securing this subscription necessitates the submission of authentic U.S. military credentials or discharge documentation to SheerID for rigorous verification. However, the initiative was subjected to immediate and rampant abuse upon its inception, with nefarious actors across various communities resorting to impersonation and the outright forgery of documents to illicitly acquire these complimentary services.
Certain subterranean syndicates even orchestrated the mass fabrication of identity credentials to harvest ChatGPT Plus subscriptions, subsequently peddling them at deeply discounted rates. While OpenAI had previously executed small-scale purges of offending accounts, the organization is now orchestrating a far more sweeping and decisive eradication.
According to discourse proliferating across X, Reddit, and disparate online forums, OpenAI is drastically fortifying its military identity vetting protocols and initiating retroactive audits of existing authentications. Consequently, a multitude of accounts secured through impersonation or falsified credentials have been summarily stripped of their subscriptions or subjected to permanent termination.
Observations derived from these community discussions indicate that OpenAI’s countermeasures encompass the following:
- The revocation of complimentary ChatGPT Plus subscriptions for offending accounts.
- The temporary suspension, or even irrevocable termination, of accounts found in violation.
- The optimization of the SheerID verification apparatus, now fortified with manual secondary reviews and sophisticated anti-fraud detection mechanisms.
At present, OpenAI remains steadfast in its commitment to providing complimentary ChatGPT Plus subscriptions to U.S. military personnel, and the requisite application portals remain fully operational. Nevertheless, following the implementation of these rigorous verification measures, any lingering aspirations to secure a subscription through fabricated documentation have been rendered fundamentally untenable.
Furthermore, it is imperative to note that numerous U.S. states maintain stringent statutes concerning the impersonation of military personnel. Therefore, the acts of impersonation or the forgery of such materials constitute not merely a breach of OpenAI’s terms of service, but potentially a severe violation of applicable U.S. law, carrying the profound weight of criminal liability.
