Previously, when ChatGPT introduced a feature allowing users to generate shareable links, an option was provided to permit indexing by search engines. Many users, unaware of the true implications, selected the option indiscriminatelyβresulting in a vast number of conversations containing private information being indexed by Google and other search engines.
Now, Elon Muskβs xAI Grok chatbot has encountered the very same issue. Within Grok AI, users can click a share button after completing a conversation to generate a link, which can then be distributed to others.
Throughout this process, xAI failed to caution users against creating share links for conversations containing sensitive material. Nor did the company implement adequate anti-crawling safeguards. Consequently, search engines such as Google have already indexed more than 370,000 conversation links.
Tests reveal that some of these shared sessions contain highly sensitive content, including personal identification details, medical queries, and even passwords. Malicious actors can freely access these links, export the data, and compile structured databases from the information.
Unlike OpenAIβwhich, after receiving feedback, removed the feature and issued a public apologyβX/Twitter and xAI are notorious for their lack of responsiveness to media inquiries. As a result, the share functionality remains online to this day, without the addition of necessary warnings.
As for the conversations already indexed by Google, they remain accessible. Anyone can simply use the search operator site:grok.com/share/ to uncover roughly 300,000 live conversation links still available.
