In recent years, game manufacturers have encountered more and more hacking and extortion incidents. For example, famous manufacturers such as CAPCOM, CDPR, and Rockstar have encountered hacker attacks and leaked a large amount of data. And this time the victim is also a well-known company, Riot Games.
According to The Record, the social engineering attack on Riot Games was recently launched. Riot Games first stated that the attack damaged systems in the development environment, causing their update frequency to slow down, but player data and personal information were not compromised.
In the next situation update, Riot Games confirmed that the source code of the two games “League of Legends” and “Teamfight Tactics”, as well as the source code of a traditional anti-cheating system, were leaked. At the same time, Riot Games once again emphasized that they believe that no player data has been leaked yet.
The leak of these source codes often means that cheats will be easier to make because cheat developers can directly observe the operating principle of the game without reverse engineering. However, Riot Games stated that they are already working hard to reduce the impact of this incident and can fix the loopholes in the anti-cheat system in due course. In addition, they also stated that the leaked source code contains a large number of experimental features that may not necessarily appear in the official game.
Riot Games is currently assessing the impact of this attack and is working to improve the security of the entire system to prevent similar incidents from happening again. They will release a detailed report on the incident in the future. In general, to prevent social engineering attacks, the security awareness of company employees and game developers is more important than computer software and hardware.
