Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has announced that it will permanently retire the old domain Twitter.com, which served as the primary address during the Twitter era. Since the platform’s rebranding, Twitter.com has simply redirected users to X.com, but that redirection will soon be discontinued entirely.
Once the old domain is deactivated, users will no longer be able to access posts or data via Twitter.com links. For example, anyone who bookmarked or shared Twitter URLs in previous years will find that these links no longer function unless they are manually updated to X.com.
The transition introduces an additional complication: users will be required to unlink and re-register their passkeys. According to the X security team, this step is necessary because the existing passkeys are tied to the deprecated Twitter.com domain and will not function under X.com.
Failure to rebind the passkey could disrupt account logins, though users have the option of removing their passkey entirely and relying instead on two-factor authentication (2FA) methods such as numeric verification codes. As long as an alternate authentication method is in place, access to the account will remain unaffected.
It is also worth noting that X’s passkey system has been prone to reliability issues, sometimes proving less dependable than the traditional six-digit verification codes. For this reason, users are advised to register both a passkey and a numeric 2FA option, ensuring a backup method is available should login issues arise.
