WebView is, in essence, a browser-based control. In Windows 11, Microsoft primarily employs a Web component built upon Microsoft Edge, which itself is based on Chromium. As this control represents the newer generation, it is commonly referred to as WebView2.
This framework enables native applications to embed a browser engine directly within their own windows, thereby rendering HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other web elements without launching a standalone browser.
Across Microsoft’s suite of applications—such as the new Outlook and Microsoft Teams—the transition to WebView2 is already well underway. Although its performance cannot rival that of fully native architectures, WebView2 offers significantly lower development overhead and excellent cross-platform compatibility. Beginning with the cumulative update scheduled for December 2025, Microsoft announced that the Web Account Manager will support Microsoft Entra ID authentication within WebView2. In other words, accounts built upon Microsoft’s enterprise identity platform will be able to sign in seamlessly to all manner of WebView2-based applications.
Microsoft underscores that this shift brings numerous advantages, including support for modern web technologies such as React and Fluent UI, as well as advanced authentication scenarios like passwordless access, passkey login, and Conditional Access (CA) policies. These capabilities also enhance compatibility with third-party identity providers and applications that rely on contemporary web standards.
This development is highlighted because Microsoft hopes enterprise IT administrators will actively embrace WebView2, ensuring that their environments and applications remain compatible with the WebView2 Runtime. Once compatibility is confirmed, administrators may enable WebView2 within the Microsoft Entra ID plug-in to better serve the demands of modern enterprises and developers.
In future versions of Windows, authentication via the Web Account Manager will be powered entirely by WebView2, as WebView controls based on Microsoft EdgeHTML are slated for deprecation.
