OpenAI recently commenced pilot testing for a novel “Sign in with ChatGPT” authentication feature across select partner platforms. Similar to Google‘s ubiquitous single sign-on mechanism, this tool allows users to link their existing ChatGPT credentials seamlessly. Consequently, individuals can bypass traditional account registration and log in directly using their OpenAI profiles.
Data Sharing and Privacy Safeguards
When utilizing this authentication method, the system shares minimal user telemetry. Specifically, it discloses only the user’s name, email address, and profile picture. External applications utilize this information exclusively for internal profile creation. Crucially, logging in through this method does not grant applications access to the user’s ChatGPT account capabilities. According to official guidelines explaining how to sign in with ChatGPT, any permission to access account features requires a separate, explicit authorization prompt.
Therefore, users can authenticate without fearing unauthorized access to their AI workspace. The single sign-on protocol operates independently from ChatGPT’s core generative functionality. Aside from basic identity credentials, all remaining personal data remains strictly shielded from third-party applications.
Pilot Integration and Future Availability
Currently, OpenAI has restricted initial testing permissions to a select group of leading platforms. The initial cohort includes Airtable, GitLab, HubSpot, Notion, Supabase, and Vercel. As testing progresses, OpenAI intends to gradually expand access to additional applications and developers.
While general developers cannot apply for access immediately, they can prepare their systems for future integration. Given the rapid pace of preliminary testing, OpenAI will likely open the authentication feature to all developers shortly.
