Many users encounter the 0x80070103 error code when attempting to download and install driver updates through Windows Update—a problem so widespread that it is frequently reported in the Feedback Hub. Until recently, Microsoft had only offered a generic workaround—clearing the update cache—which did little to resolve the underlying issue.
Now, in its latest support documentation, Microsoft has officially acknowledged the problem, stating that the company is aware of the driver installation failures on Windows 11 and is taking measures to reduce the frequency of error 0x80070103.
Of course, 0x80070103 is not the only error code users may encounter. Some have also reported 0x800f0983 and other variants, all of which can prevent the successful installation of driver updates, leaving systems unable to access the latest hardware improvements.
However, based on Microsoft’s wording, these measures appear mitigative rather than definitive. While they may reduce the likelihood of installation errors, they do not guarantee a complete fix, meaning occasional failures may still occur due to unforeseen system conditions.
In its October 28 release of the Windows 11 25H2 Preview Update (KB5067036, Builds 26200.7019/26100.1079), Microsoft noted:
“Made underlying changes to help reduce users seeing drivers fail to install with error 0x80070103.”
These enhancements have already been deployed in preview builds and are expected to roll out to all Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 stable users in the November ‘B’ release update, after which driver update installations should proceed more smoothly and reliably.
