Microsoft has issued a critical update notice, MC1127222, directed at enterprise IT administrators and system managers, confirming that certain Microsoft 365 features—specifically those tied to Office intelligent services—will cease to function unless applications are updated accordingly.
The intelligent services embedded within Microsoft 365 and Office include features such as Read Aloud, Audio Transcription, and Dictation—tools designed to enhance user convenience and productivity. Microsoft has stated that users must upgrade to at least version 16.0.18827.20202 to continue utilizing these capabilities.
While these features are primarily integrated within Word, they are also utilized in other applications such as Outlook, OneNote, and PowerPoint. As such, these applications must likewise be updated to retain full functionality.
Though Microsoft has not disclosed every technical detail, it has confirmed that it is in the process of upgrading backend services that support these features. As a result, calls to these services from outdated applications may be disrupted—prompting Microsoft to advise enterprises to prepare for necessary updates in advance.
For individual users, the impact is negligible, as Microsoft 365 installations on personal devices typically have automatic updates enabled and will be upgraded automatically. Enterprise deployments, however, often require manual oversight from IT administrators, and may not immediately reflect the latest versions.
According to Microsoft’s timeline, starting in January 2026, both personal and enterprise users running versions below 16.0.18827.20202 will lose access to these intelligent features. Until then, legacy backend support will remain available in a limited capacity, but will be fully phased out at the start of next year.
To check your version and initiate an update: Open Word, navigate to “Account,” and click on “About Word” to view the installed version of Microsoft 365. From the same account page, you can also select the update option to immediately check for and apply the latest updates.
