‘Vibe Working’ Is Here: Microsoft Introduces AI Agent Mode for Word and Excel

Microsoft is striving to establish “Vibe Working” as the next office trend. Following its earlier application of AI in programming—branded as “Vibe Coding”—the company is now extending the concept into Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, introducing a new “Agent Mode” designed to create a fresh paradigm of human–machine collaboration.

According to Microsoft, users of Office applications can leverage Copilot Chat or the Office Agent to generate an initial draft with just a brief prompt, then refine it through iterative interaction with AI until it evolves into a polished, complete document. The company defines this process as a “new generation of collaborative workflows,” intended to minimize repetitive tasks and allow users to focus on content and decision-making.

At present, Agent Mode is already available in Word and Excel, with PowerPoint support expected in future updates. For Excel users in particular, Microsoft emphasizes that AI can “understand Excel” and help bridge the gap for those unfamiliar with advanced formulas or macros.

The company also released benchmark results: in the SpreadsheetBench tests, Copilot’s Agent Mode achieved 57.2% accuracy in Excel tasks—still short of the human average of 71.3%, but a promising demonstration of AI’s viability in professional tools.

In Word, beyond drafting, Agent Mode can summarize, edit, and expand content, or even rewrite documents to match a user’s preferred style. However, Microsoft has not disclosed accuracy metrics for Word, leaving its real-world performance to be proven through broader testing.

Meanwhile, Office Agent can also function within Copilot Chat, enabling users to generate PowerPoint presentations or Word documents directly through conversational prompts—ushering in a “dialogue-centric” creative process. Behind the scenes, the system blends OpenAI and Anthropic models, deploying them across different scenarios to maximize output quality.

Currently, both Excel and Word’s Agent Mode, as well as Office Agent, are available for early testing via the Frontier Program, though only on the web version. Desktop support is expected to follow soon.

Despite Microsoft’s push to popularize the idea of Vibe Working, skepticism remains about the true value of AI in office environments. Critics warn that overreliance on AI could erode users’ learning and critical thinking skills, while questions of reliability and accuracy remain pivotal for enterprise adoption.

In essence, Microsoft is attempting to redefine the modern workflow by embedding AI deeply into its Office suite—transforming Excel proficiency from the domain of specialists into an ability accessible to anyone with AI assistance. Whether this shift genuinely enhances productivity or merely creates a “vibe-driven” approach to work remains a question that only market adoption and user experience can ultimately answer.
