Revamped "Start" Menu Interface
Yesterday, after Microsoft rolled out a routine update to Windows 11 24H2, compatibility issues were discovered on certain devices, prompting the company to withdraw the update and reissue a revised version. However, Microsoft had not yet realized that the update also triggered compatibility problems with the Easy Anti-Cheat module.
Easy Anti-Cheat—an anti-cheat system reviled by many gamers—is known for operating with kernel-level privileges. This often results in compatibility glitches, causing games to fail during launch or crash unexpectedly mid-session.
The update released yesterday, KB5060842, was found to introduce a compatibility flaw that could cause the anti-cheat module to unexpectedly trigger a system restart. To address this issue, Microsoft has now released an out-of-band update, KB5063060, specifically aimed at resolving the conflict with Easy Anti-Cheat.
This issue primarily affects gamers. Users who do not intend to run games on Windows 11 24H2 can safely disregard this update. That said, KB5063060 is a cumulative patch that also includes all previously released updates, making it a comprehensive update that addresses various security vulnerabilities as well.
Microsoft stated on its Health Dashboard:
“This update addresses an incompatibility issue where Windows might restart unexpectedly when opening games that use the Easy Anti-Cheat service. Easy Anti-Cheat automatically installs with certain games to enhance security and prevent cheating in multiplayer online PC games. .”
It’s important to note that this fix only addresses compatibility between Windows and the anti-cheat system. Easy Anti-Cheat itself still suffers from other known issues—for instance, games may crash on PCs equipped with Intel Alder Lake+ or Intel vPro processors.
As these problems fall outside Microsoft’s scope, the company will not be addressing them. Instead, Microsoft advises users to run updated versions of games that bundle newer builds of Easy Anti-Cheat. Ultimately, it is up to the anti-cheat developers to diagnose and release fixes for the underlying issues.
