This week, while Microsoft refrained from issuing nascent preview builds to Windows 11 Insiders, the ecosystem was not entirely devoid of innovation. The corporation unveiled updated iterations of Notepad and Paint—arguably the two most iconic “native” applications within the Windows repertoire.
The revitalized Notepad (version 11.2512.10.0) has ascended closer to the status of a sophisticated text editor. It now boasts enhanced Markdown formatting capabilities, specifically strike-through text and nested lists—a subtle yet welcome refinement for those who frequently orchestrate notes and preliminary drafts. Furthermore, a new “Welcome Screen” has been introduced to acquaint users with the application’s latest functionalities, accessible via a megaphone icon situated in the upper-right corner of the toolbar. Microsoft has also optimized the performance of its integrated AI; whether generating, rewriting, or summarizing text via local or cloud-based models, results are now delivered with greater celerity and stream incrementally, eliminating the wait for a terminal response.
Paint has similarly undergone a meaningful transformation. Version 11.2512.191.0 introduces the Coloring Book feature—an AI-driven instrument capable of generating intricate coloring pages from descriptive textual prompts. Users can select from several AI-generated drafts to populate their canvas, duplicate, or preserve. Notably, this functionality is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs and necessitates authentication via a Microsoft account. Beyond artificial intelligence, Paint now features a “Fill Tolerance” slider, granting users granular control over the precision of the Bucket Fill tool—ranging from clinical exactitude to more expansive, expressive color applications.
These refreshed versions of Notepad and Paint are currently being disseminated to Windows Insider participants within the Canary and Dev channels. Detailed documentation of these refinements is available on the official Microsoft development blog.
