Revamped "Start" Menu Interface
This week, Microsoft released a new build to the Windows Insider Dev and Beta channels. Following the update, devices in the Dev channel now display the version number as Windows 11 25H2—marking this as the company’s designated annual update for the year 2025.
In an official blog post, Microsoft outlined how enterprise and institutional clients can begin preparing for the arrival of Windows 11 version 25H2. The company noted that versions 24H2 and 25H2 share the same Windows NT servicing branch, allowing for a seamless upgrade via an Enablement Package (eKB).
An eKB, or Enablement Package, contains the necessary code to activate features that are already present but dormant within version 24H2. This means that when version 25H2 is officially released, Microsoft can swiftly enable it by simply deploying the eKB—transforming the existing installation into the latest version with minimal data download.
Upgrades performed through this method are notably fast, as the required download is relatively small. However, this efficiency applies only to consecutive version updates. For instance, if upgrading from Windows 11 23H2 to 25H2, the process will first require downloading the full 24H2 update and then applying the 25H2 eKB, which may involve multiple system restarts.
The consumer editions of Windows 11 25H2—including Home and Pro—will receive 24 months of update support, expected to last through October 2027. The enterprise branch, however, will benefit from 36 months of support, with updates extending until October 2028.
Although Microsoft has not yet announced an official release date for version 25H2, based on historical patterns, the OEM image is likely to be finalized in September, with general availability and rollout to supported devices beginning in early October.
