The Windows 11 2025 annual update is expected to be released in October, but Microsoft has already begun rolling out the build to users in the Windows Insider Release Preview channel for early testing.
It should be noted that Windows 11 version 25H2 is classified as a minor update. Delivered as an enablement package on top of version 24H2, it activates new features without introducing extensive changes, meaning the overall improvements are relatively modest.
According to Microsoft, users enrolled in the Release Preview channel can now navigate to Windows Update and manually click Check for Updates, where a banner will appear indicating that Windows 11 version 25H2 is available for download and installation.
Unlike Windows 11 version 24H2, which was a full operating system release, version 25H2 is distributed as an enablement package and shares the same servicing branch as 24H2. As a result, both versions will ultimately receive identical features.
Beyond the addition of new capabilities, version 25H2 will also remove certain legacy components. PowerShell 2.0 support has been discontinued, and the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Command Line tool has been deprecated. IT administrators will also gain the ability to uninstall more preinstalled system applications on enterprise and education devices using Group Policy or MDM CSP.
Commercial customers will soon have access to the update as well, with IT administrators able to deploy it through Windows Update for Business (WUfB) and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).
In the cloud, Microsoft is making Windows 11 version 25H2 available through Azure, allowing enterprises to test deployments ahead of release, including compatibility validation within Windows 365 environments.
Finally, Microsoft announced that ISO images of Windows 11 version 25H2 will be published next week. This will allow not only Windows Insider participants but also users of the stable Windows 11 release to upgrade directly to 25H2 via ISO installation.
