In the latest Windows 11 Developer and Insider Preview builds, Microsoft has introduced a new full-screen interface called the Second Out-of-Box Experience (SCOOBE), designed to remind users to renew their Microsoft 365 subscriptions.
At present, subscription reminders are already integrated into the Windows 11 Settings app, but Microsoft appears to consider this insufficient, opting instead to deploy full-screen prompts warning users when their Microsoft 365 plans are nearing expiration or when renewal has failed.
The SCOOBE interface appears after a system reboot, blocking access to the desktop until the user either accepts or dismisses Microsoft’s promotional offers—such as enabling backups through OneDrive.
According to Microsoft, this interface will surface if a subscription issue arises, for instance, when an automatic renewal payment cannot be processed. In such cases, users are given the option to review and update their payment methods directly from the prompt.
But what if a user does not have an active Microsoft 365 subscription? In that scenario, SCOOBE may still occasionally appear, encouraging them to subscribe and sign in via OneDrive.
The silver lining is that Microsoft has at least provided a way to disable these interruptions. Users can navigate to Settings → System → Notifications → Additional Notifications and turn off the “Second Out-of-Box Experience” option, preventing further pop-ups.
As with all features in preview builds, there is no absolute guarantee that SCOOBE will appear in the final release of Windows 11. However, given its nature as a standard system feature, it is highly likely to make its way into the stable version.
